Behold the Lamb: A Good Friday Reflection with Dr. Balajied Nongrum

Good Friday is more than a day of mourning; it is a day of profound recognition. Yesterday, at Union Church in Bhubaneswar, we gathered for the English Worship service to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that defines our faith. Dr. Balajied Nongrum brought a powerful word titled "Behold, the Lamb," grounding us in the weight and the wonder of John 1:29.

The Shadow of the Lamb: A Biblical Context

The message began by tracing the lineage of sacrifice. From the blood on the doorposts in Egypt to the smoke rising from the Temple altars, the Old Testament was a long shadow pointing toward a single, perfect substitute. Dr. Nongrum reminded us that while those ancient sacrifices covered sin temporarily, they were always intended to prepare our hearts for the Final Lamb.

The Weight of the World: The Human Problem

It is impossible to appreciate the Cross without first acknowledging the crushing weight of the "sin of the world." This movement of the sermon explored the gravity of our transgression—not just individual mistakes, but a fundamental separation from God that no amount of human effort or religious ritual could ever bridge.

The Perfect Substitution: The Divine Solution

The turning point of the message focused on the mechanics of atonement. Why Jesus? Because only the Lamb of God—fully divine and fully human—could take away sin rather than just mask it. In this movement, the core scripture came alive: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29).

Behold and Believe: Our Call to Action

To "behold" is not to merely observe or acknowledge a historical fact. Dr. Nongrum challenged us to move beyond a casual glance. To behold is to gaze with faith, to surrender to the finished work of Christ, and to allow that encounter to transform our walk. The service concluded with a call to move from the encounter of the cross into a life of worship and obedience.
