Scripture Reference: Matthew 17:14–20
Have you ever felt like your faith was too small to matter? Like your prayers were too weak or your efforts too little to make any difference?
In Matthew 17, Jesus says something beautifully simple yet incredibly powerful:
“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
— Matthew 17:20
This devotion is a gentle reminder: It’s not the size of our faith that matters—it’s the sincerity and direction of it.
🔍 The Power of Small Things
Let’s start with a simple question: Can something very small make a big difference?
Absolutely!
-
A spark can start a wildfire
-
A single drop of water can, over time, carve through stone
-
A kind word can lift a heavy heart
-
A mustard seed—tiny as it is—grows into a tree strong enough to give shelter
Faith works the same way. You don’t need giant faith to move mountains—you just need real faith.
🪨 David and the Five Small Stones
Think of David—just a young shepherd boy facing a seasoned warrior named Goliath (1 Samuel 17).
David didn’t come armed with a sword or shield. Instead, he came with:
-
A slingshot
-
Five small stones
-
Unshakable trust in God
He said, “You come against me with a sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord.”
That’s mustard seed faith in action. It wasn’t the stone that won the battle—it was faith in God.
💰 The Widow’s Offering
Another touching example is found in Mark 12:41–44. Jesus observed a poor widow offering two small coins—almost worthless in human terms.
But He said, “This woman has given more than all the others. They gave out of their wealth, but she gave everything she had.”
Why did it matter? Because it came from faith.
Small offerings, when given from the heart, have great value in God's eyes.
🌾 How Can We Live Out Mustard Seed Faith?
Here are three simple ways:
1. Start Small
-
Say a prayer, even when you’re unsure
-
Obey in small matters
-
Begin where you are
2. Trust in Uncertainty
-
You may not see the outcome—but God does
-
Trust like David and the widow did
3. Watch It Grow
-
Nurture your faith through the Word
-
Walk in obedience
-
Talk to God—daily, honestly
Every small step of faith becomes a building block for something greater.
🖍 Faith Postcards: A Personal Activity
Here’s something you can do right now:
📝 Write one way you will trust God this week.
Examples:
-
I will pray even when I don’t feel strong.
-
I will be kind, even when it’s hard.
-
I will trust God instead of worrying.
Put it somewhere you can see. Let it be a seed of your growing faith.
🙏 A Closing Word
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You don’t need perfect, strong, giant faith.
You just need to place your small, genuine faith in a big, faithful God.
“With faith as small as a mustard seed—God can move mountains!”
🙌 Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for teaching us that even small faith is valuable. Help us to trust You, even when our faith feels weak. Help us grow in faith and believe that You can do great things through us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
