🌅Introduction: The Dawn of a New Era
Good morning, and Happy Pentecost! Today we
celebrate a pivotal moment (ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ମୁହୂର୍ତ୍ତ) in Christian history: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost, derived from the Greek word meaning “fiftieth,” marks the Jewish
Harvest Feast, or Feast of Weeks. Just as God appeared on Sinai for the birth
of the Jewish nation, Pentecost is widely regarded as the birthday of the
Christian Church.
The story of Pentecost, found in Acts
2:1-21, is familiar: the disciples were initially huddled behind closed doors,
terrorized, demoralized, and paralyzed after Jesus’ crucifixion and ascension.
But on Pentecost Day, they were catapulted outdoors by the Holy Spirit. This
transforms them from “dispirited” (ହତାଶ) to “spirited” (ଉତ୍ସାହିତ), giving them courage and hope (ସାହସ ଏବଂ ଆଶା).
🔥I. The Promise and Fulfilment of the Holy Spirit: A New
Covenant
* A
Long-Awaited Promise: Long before this day, God promised through prophets
like Joel that His Spirit would be” poured out on all flesh” (Joel 2:28-29) This promise was
reaffirmed by John the Baptist, who declared that Jesus would baptize with the
Holy Spirit and fire Jesus himself told His disciples to” wait for the
gift my Father promised” (ପିତାଙ୍କର ଯେଉଁ ପ୍ରତିଜ୍ଞା) in Jerusalem, promising they would receive power (ଊର୍ଦ୍ଧ୍ଵରୁ ଶକ୍ତିପ୍ରାପ୍ତ) when the Holy
Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:4-5, Luke 24:49).
* The Dramatic Arrival: Acts 2:1-4 describes
this fulfilment:” When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in
one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing
wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided
tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they
were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the
Spirit gave them utterance”.
This dramatic display served as
confirmation and authentication (ନିଶ୍ଚିତକରଣ ଏବଂ ପ୍ରମାଣୀକରଣ) that what was occurring was the work of God and the breaking in of
the Messianic age, especially to the Jewish people. The tongues of fire
symbolized God’s presence, fusing divinity and humanity (ଦିବ୍ୟତା ଏବଂ ମାନବତାକୁ ମିଶ୍ରଣ କରିବା), or restoring it to God’s original intention.
📜II. The Holy Spirit’s Work Throughout History
✨A. In the Old Testament: Selective and Temporary
* The Holy Spirit was active
throughout the Old Testament, mentioned 86 times in 27 of 39 books.
* Creation and Sustenance:
The Spirit was personally involved in creation, “hovering over the waters” (ପୁଣି ପରମେଶ୍ଵରଙ୍କ ଆତ୍ମା ଜଳ ଉପରେ ବ୍ୟାପ୍ତ ଥିଲେ) (Genesis 1:1-2),
bringing order out of chaos, and sustaining all-natural life (Psalm 104:30, Job 33:4).
* Revelation and Prophecy:
The Spirit spoke God’s words through prophets and leaders (Isaiah 59:21, 2
Samuel 23:2, Micah 3:8). He enabled them to speak God’s word and write the
(2 Peter 1:21).
* Promoting Holiness and
Addressing Evil: God contended with humans in their sinful nature, and the
Spirit restrained sin and motivated confrontation against it (Genesis 6:3).
David prayed that God would not take His Holy Spirit from him (Psalm 51:11).
* Regeneration: Old
Testament believers were regenerated by the Spirit to overcome hostility toward
God (Romans 8:7-9), looking forward to the Messiah and born again by faith.
This “circumcision of the heart” (ତୁମ୍ଭର ହୃଦୟ ଓ ତୁମ୍ଭ ବଂଶର ହୃଦୟ ସୁନ୍ନତ କରିବେ) (Deuteronomy 30:6) was the Spirit’s work (Ezekiel 11:19-20;
* Empowerment for Specific
Tasks: The Spirit “came upon” individuals temporarily for God’s purposes,
such as leading Israel (Joshua – Numbers 27:18), judging (Othniel – Judges
3:10, Samson – Judges 14:6, 15:14), or building the tabernacle (Bezaleel –
Exodus 31:1-5). God encouraged Zerubbabel to build the temple, telling, “Not by
might nor by power, but by my Spirit...”
* Granting Special Skills:
The Spirit gifted individuals with wisdom, understanding, and special skills
like interpreting dreams (Joseph – Genesis 41:1-38) or prophetic powers
* Indwelling (Selective &
Temporary): In the Old Testament, the indwelling or filling by the Spirit
was mostly selective and temporary, unlike the New Testament where it is
permanent.
* Pointed to the Messiah: The Spirit pointed to the coming Messiah, noting that the Spirit would rest upon Him (ଆମ୍ଭେ ତାହାଙ୍କ ଉପରେ ଆପଣା ଆତ୍ମା ସ୍ଥାପନ କରିଅଛୁ) (Isaiah 42:1, Isaiah 11:1-2) (ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କର ଆତ୍ମା, ଜ୍ଞାନ ଓ ବିବେଚନାର ଆତ୍ମା, ମନ୍ତ୍ରଣା ଓ ପରାକ୍ରମର ଆତ୍ମା, ବୁଦ୍ଧି ଓ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ ବିଷୟକ ଭୟର ଆତ୍ମା ତାହାଙ୍କଠାରେ ଅଧିଷ୍ଠାନ କରିବେ).
👑B. In Jesus’ Ministry: The Anointed One
* Conception: Jesus was
conceived by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20)
* Baptism and Anointing:
The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in bodily form like a dove at His baptism
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power
* Leading and Empowerment:
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit (ଯୀଶୁ ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମାରେ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ହୋଇ), was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (ପ୍ରାନ୍ତରରେ) (Luke 4:1). His
ministry was launched in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:14, 18) (ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କର ଆତ୍ମା ମୋʼଠାରେ ଅଧିଷ୍ଠିତ), performing works
like healing, delivering, and preaching the Gospel to the poor and captives
* Teaching about the Spirit:
Jesus taught His disciples about the Holy Spirit as the “Helper” (ସାହାଯ୍ୟକାରୀ) or “Comforter”
whom the Father would send (John 14:26, 15:26, 16:7). He described the Spirit’s
work as “springs of living water” flowing from believers (John 7:38-39) . He promised the Holy Spirit would teach them and remind them of
all He had said (John 14:26)
* Crucifixion and
Resurrection: The Holy Spirit was with Jesus during His crucifixion,
enabling Him to submit as a sacrifice (Hebrews 9:14). The Bible
also makes it clear the Holy Spirit was involved in the resurrection of Jesus
* Post-Resurrection
Instructions: Between His resurrection and ascension, Jesus gave
instructions to His disciples through the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:2).
💒III. The Transformative Power of the Holy Spirit in the
New Testament Church
* From
Fear to Boldness (ଭୟରୁ ସାହସିକତା ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ): Before Pentecost, the disciples were
fearful and dispirited, huddled and anxious. After being filled with the Holy
Spirit, Peter, who had once denied Jesus, became bold. He stood up and
declared the message of Jesus without fear (Acts 2:14-41). This shows a
transformation from “dispirited” to “spirited,” given courage and hope.
* Empowerment
for Witness and Ministry: The Holy Spirit’s arrival was for empowerment
(Acts 1:8), enabling the Church to fulfill Christ’s Great
Commission with boldness and authority
The Holy Spirit works through ordinary people, making them
extraordinary (ଅସାଧାରଣ) servants for God’s purposes. Peter, an unschooled fisherman,
became a great leader because he “had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). The Spirit
equips believers with inner strength (Ephesians 3:16) and power for witness
* The
Spirit’s Indwelling and Personal Transformation: The New Testament
emphasizes a significant shift: the Holy Spirit permanently indwells believers.
Our bodies become “temples of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This
indwelling brings new life (Titus 3:5), confirms our belonging to God (Romans
8:15-17), helps us understand Scripture (1 Corinthians 2:12), enriches prayer
life (Romans 8:26-27), and empowers us to live Godly lives (Galatians 5:16).
The Spirit produces the fruit of the Spirit in our lives: “love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control”
(Galatians 5:22-23).
* Unity
in Diversity: On Pentecost, people from “every nation under heaven” heard
the apostles speaking in their own native language. This multilingual miracle
reversed the division of languages at the Tower of Babel. The Holy Spirit
breaks down human-made barriers, reminding us that God is present in, and
speaks to, every nation and community in the world as they are. In Christ,
gender, age, and social class do not matter (Galatians 3:28). The church is
meant to be a community that celebrates cultural differences and shows radical
equality.
* A Spirit-Filled Community Life: Pentecost
birthed a strong community. The early believers devoted themselves to the
apostles’ teaching, fellowship (koinonia), the breaking of bread, and
prayers (Acts 2:42). They held all things in common, selling possessions and
distributing to those in need (Acts 2:44-45). This radical sharing was a
natural response where God was especially at work. This communal life, characterised
by” glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favour with all the
people,” saw the Lord daily adding to their number those who were being saved
(Acts 2:46-47).
* Guidance
for God’s Purpose: The Holy Spirit teaches and leads us, providing guidance,
direction, and insight. He empowers us to live out our faith and follow
Jesus’ example. The Holy Spirit directs where the Gospel should be preached
(Acts 16:6-7) and calls out individuals for specific mission tasks (Acts 13:2).
The Spirit’s work is essential for the expansion of the Christian church and
for effective mission in the world.
* Distribution
of Gifts: The Holy Spirit distributes a variety of spiritual gifts
to every believer for the edification (ଉନ୍ନତିକରଣ) of the
body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:4-6, 7-11). These
gifts, such as prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership,
mercy, faith, healing, and discernment, are expressions of God’s ongoing
presence and are for strengthening the Church and bringing order to ministry
(Ephesians 4:11-13). While not all spiritual gifts are miraculous today, the
Holy Spirit continues to provide gifts to equip and empower the church.
🙌Conclusion: A Call to Pentecost Today
*
The Pentecostal outpouring is not a historical relic; it is an ongoing
invitation to receive the fullness of God today. The Holy Spirit is a continual
source of empowerment, gifting, and guidance.
*
We are called to live as a Spirit-filled community, helping each other,
gathering to pray, and bringing hope to those in need. We can experience our
own “little Pentecosts” by inviting the Holy Spirit daily into our lives,
fostering community, and embracing boldness to serve.
*
As Paul urged, we must” earnestly desire spiritual gifts” (1 Corinthians
14:1) not for personal status, but to serve others with grace and purpose. Let
us remember that God has poured out His Spirit. How will we respond? May
Pentecost not just be a commemoration, but a continuous experience of God’s
transformative power in our lives and in the world. Amen.
